Auguste Comte
Auguste Comte (1798–1857) — French philosopher, known as Father of Positivism and Father of Sociology.
Reliable knowledge should be based on observation, comparison, classification, experiment and scientific reasoning — not theological speculation or abstract metaphysics.
Meaning of Positivism
Positivism: Philosophical and research approach where authentic knowledge is based on observable, measurable and empirically verifiable facts. Emphasises using natural science methods for studying social phenomena.
Law of Three Stages
- Theological Stage: Phenomena explained by supernatural powers, gods, divine will. (Fetishism → Polytheism → Monotheism)
- Metaphysical Stage: Phenomena explained by abstract forces, essences, speculative concepts (transitional stage).
- Positive/Scientific Stage: Phenomena explained through observation, evidence, classification and scientific laws.
Hierarchy of Sciences
- Mathematics is most general and comparatively simple
- Sociology is most complex (study of human society)
- Later sciences partly depend on earlier sciences' principles
Exam Trap: Comte's original hierarchy did NOT give Psychology a prominent place as an independent science.

Exam Trap: Not every quantitative study is philosophically pure positivist. Post-positivists also use quantitative methods.
Verification Principle
In traditional positivist orientation, proposition's meaning and scientific value are linked to empirical observation/verification.
Limitation: Many observations supporting a theory do NOT prove it permanently and universally true. This limitation was important in the development of Post-Positivism and Popper's falsification approach.
Limitations of Positivism
- Complete objectivity is difficult

- Under-emphasises context

Post-Positivism
- Does not completely reject Positivism

Karl Popper and Falsification
A scientific theory should be capable of being proven false by evidence.
